Key tax and superannuation thresholds
Medical expenses offset
Taxpayers can claim back a portion of their medical expenses depending on their income. The amounts claimable are:
- single taxpayers with adjusted taxable incomes (ATI) of $90,000 or less and families with a combined ATI of $180,000 or less can claim 20% of net medical expenses over the Level 1 threshold ($2,377 for 2018/19).
- single taxpayers with ATI above $90,000 and families with a combined ATI above $180,000 will be able to claim 10% of net medical expenses over the Level 2 threshold ($5,609 for 2018/19).
Taxpayers can only claim medical expenses for disability aids, attendant care or aged care. The medical expenses offset is being phased out and the last year the offset is available is 2018/19
