Temporary residents

Section: 2.14

Temporary residents may contribute to superannuation. A temporary resident is generally a foreign national who has been granted the right to stay in Australia for a certain period of time (e.g. with a temporary visa), without full citizenship or permanent residency. A tax file number will be required for member contributions. However, be aware that from 1 April 2009, only limited conditions of release are available to temporary or former  temporary residents.

Therefore, fund trustees should be aware if an application for membership of a super fund is in respect of a temporary resident.
