Maximum age limit for contributions

Section: 2.8

Mandated employer contributions can be received at any time, regardless of the member's age.

Voluntary member contributions made by the member and voluntary employer contributions can only be received where the member is under age 75 at the time of contribution (this includes the period up to 28 days after the end of the month in which the member reaches 75). Voluntary member contributions made by someone other than the member (e.g. spouse contributions) can only be received where the member is under age 70 at the time of the contribution.

There is no maximum age limit for downsizer superannuation contributions, which are a type of voluntary member contributions. Subject to meeting all qualification criteria, someone age 65 or over can make a downsizer super contribution.

2019 Federal Budget proposal

No work test for voluntary contributions extended to age 66: Effective 1 July 2020

The Government proposed to amend the superannuation contribution rules to allow people age 65 and 66 to make voluntary member and voluntary employer contributions to superannuation without meeting the work test.

At the time of writing, this proposal is not yet law.

Spouse contributions extended to age 74: Effective 1 July 2020

The Government proposed to allow spouse contributions to be made up until the receiving spouse reaches age 75. In addition, where the receiving spouse is age 65 or 66, the Government proposed they no longer need to meet a work test. A receiving spouse will need to meet the work test from age 67.

At the time of writing, this proposal is not yet law.

Bring-forward rule extended to age 66: Effective 1 July 2020

The Government proposed that people age under 67 at any time during a financial year (eg age 65 or 66) will be able to trigger the non-concessional bring-forward rule.

The ability to use the bring-forward rule will remain subject to the member's total superannuation balance on 30 June prior to the financial year of the contributions.

At the time of writing, this proposal is not yet law.
